Updates

Policy Changes

Several campus health protocols have been relaxed in response to the high proportion of our students who have received at least their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccination.
  • Masks are optional for students, faculty, and staff outdoors in groups of 25 or less. You are still required to carry a mask with you at all times. Masks will still be required outdoors for all University programs because these events involve larger groups. Everyone is still required to wear masks while indoors at all times, unless in your residence hall room or private office.
  • Students who do not live in the same residence hall may socialize 24 hours a day in designated 24-hour common spaces in each hall and also may continue to attend all hall Masses. Masks, occupancy, and distancing guidelines must be observed at all times.
  • Students from the same hall may continue to visit one another’s rooms. Guests are limited to no more than two students beyond the number of residents assigned to the student room/suite. When resident guests are present in student rooms, everyone in the room must wear masks, distance appropriately, and leave doors open to increase ventilation.
  • The maximum number of people at informal gatherings outdoors is increased from 10 to 25.
  • Indoor gatherings should continue to be limited to 10 individuals or fewer and include wearing masks and practicing physical distancing.
  • Basketball rims and volleyball nets are being reinstalled outside.

Vaccination Requirement for Summer and Fall

The University will require all students to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before arriving on campus for the 2021 summer sessions and the 2021-22 academic year. For the summer session, students must complete their vaccination no later than Sunday, June 13. For the fall semester, students must be fully vaccinated before arriving on campus.
Vaccines must be approved by a US federal agency to be accepted as part of the requirement. If a student has trouble accessing a US-approved vaccine in their home state or country, they should contact University Health Services at least four weeks prior to arrival.
Students may apply for religious or medical exemptions. Students who will spend fewer than seven consecutive days on campus are exempt from the requirement, though vaccination is strongly encouraged.

Vaccine Uploads for Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff members who have received either the second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine are asked to upload their vaccination documentation into PyraMed, the electronic medical record in University Health Services. Understanding the vaccination coverage among our faculty and staff will help us develop the most appropriate public health protocols for the summer and fall.

Second Dose Vaccination

Next week the Vaccine Administration Center at Compton Family Ice Arena (VACC) will begin administering the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine. The center will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 29 through Thursday, May 6. You should have made your second appointment when you received your first dose at the center. For questions, please contact the COVID-19 Hotline at 574-634-HERE (4373) or covidresponseunit@nd.edu.

Volunteers for Vaccination Center

The Vaccine Administration Center is looking for volunteers to serve as greeters and to perform a variety of non-medical, administrative functions from April 29 to May 6. Daily volunteer shifts are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Volunteers will not be administering the vaccines. Several volunteer roles require using technology to manage appointments and registration. This system is simple to use and volunteers will receive the necessary training on-site. To volunteer for a shift, please fill out this form

Summer University-Sponsored Travel Policy

As the University continues to balance health and safety considerations with a return to normal operations, limitations on University-related travel codified in the University’s COVID-19 Policy will be lifted for the period between May 23, 2021, and August 20, 2021 (“Summer session”). However, travelers remain subject to certain restrictions.

Answers to Your Questions

Has the definition of contact changed with the relaxed health and safety protocols?

Despite the relaxed health and safety protocols, the definition of close contact will not change. Exposure to a positive person or someone who displays primary COVID-19 symptoms, within 6 feet, for 15 minutes or more, with at least one of the people not wearing a mask, will still result in the need to quarantine. However, if you are fully vaccinated at the time of exposure, you do not need to quarantine. People are considered fully vaccinated after 14 days from the date they receive the final dose of their vaccine.

If I received my first vaccination outside of the University and do not have my second dose scheduled, how can I schedule it?

Go to https://vaccinefinder.org/. You will be asked if you have already received your first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. By answering “Yes”, you can find a vaccination site to administer your second dose. If you received your first dose at the University’s vaccination site, you have already been scheduled to receive your second dose at the University vaccination site in May.
