Dear (Name),

Season’s greetings to you and yours!

Over the past few years, Brown has been proud to boast a strong and growing relationship with Korea. We’re thrilled to present this newsletter to our committed Brown community in Korea to illustrate some of the exciting programming happening on College Hill. We hope you enjoy reading about these recent developments.

Also, we are planning on traveling to Seoul in late April and look forward to the opportunity to connect with you in person.

With warm regards from College Hill,

Faculty Recruitment

This fall, the University welcomed two new lecturers in Korean Language and Literature. The addition of these two new positions will allow us to offer more classes and to reach more students who have an increasing interest in Korean language and culture. The new lecturers are:

Brown in Korea

In addition to the work being done on College Hill, Brown continues to have a close and important relationship with several Korean institutions.

Since 2018, Brown has had a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hyundai Motor Company. The partnership is focused on supporting academic research in advanced mobility and accelerating potential research projects and start-up companies based on relevant technologies from Brown. One exciting innovation that has already come from this partnership is the Robust Bat-inspired Aerial Robotics project. A team of graduate and undergraduate students, alongside Engineering Professors Kenny Breuer and Sharon Swartz, was named one of four winners at the Brown-Hyundai Visionary Challenge 2018.

Brown has also had an ongoing Memorandum of Understanding with SK Innovation, focused on advancing the boundaries of scientific discovery in several areas including solid mechanics and chemical and materials engineering. This partnership has supported several exciting research projects within the School of Engineering.

International Financial Aid

On October 25, 2021, President Christina H. Paxson announced that the University would begin moving toward need-blind admissions for international students over the next four years, beginning with the Class of 2029 (which will matriculate at Brown in fall 2025). Brown will join the ranks of five other colleges and universities nationwide that are need-blind for international students. This exciting initiative will be funded jointly by the University endowment and through gifts of endowed funds from the Brown community.

In 2022, anonymous Korean parents established an endowed scholarship fund to support the new international financial aid initiative. Their fund will provide scholarship support for international undergraduate students and support Brown's goal of implementing need-blind admission for international students as a permanent part of its admission policies.

One student who has already benefited from international financial aid is:

Minsik Cho ’22, Suwon, South Korea

Considering my financial status, my family and I decided in my senior year at high school that the only way I would be able to go to a school in the U.S. is if I could get a good financial aid award. In that regard, Brown’s financial aid is what allowed me to come here. So many academic accomplishments in research I was able to achieve at Brown would not have been possible from the start without the generous financial aid.

“The research opportunities I had at Brown resulted in writing a paper as a second author with a Brown faculty member, Professor Brenda Rubenstein. In the summer research experiences that my advisor introduced me to, I was able to publish a paper as a first author and two papers as a second author. I am now studying theoretical chemistry at MIT as the Robert T. Haslam MIT Presidential Fellow and the Kwanjeong Fellow.”

Giving

Donors from Korea have contributed to a wide array of initiatives at the University, including The Brown Fund, The Brown Promise, The Parents Fund, Public Health, Professorships, Engineering, and Athletics.

The Seoam Yoon Se Young Lectureship Fund was established in 2021 by the Seoam Yoon Se Young Foundation to support a named lecturer to teach Korean Language and Literature. This fund has helped Brown address the increasing interest in studying Korean language on campus by creating a permanent Korean language lecturer position.

The Lim Family Endowment for the Korean Studies and Language Programs was established in 2022 by Sukjin S. Lim ’92, P’25 and Suemin Cho P’25 to celebrate Sukjin’s 30th reunion. The fund will provide flexible support for Korean Studies & Korean language programs.

The Kyunghun Kim ’97 and Alice Mi Jung Kim ’97 Library General Collections Fund was established in 2022 by Kyunghun Kim ’97 and Alice Mi Jung Kim ’97 to celebrate their 25th reunion. The fund will provide support for the library to acquire, preserve, and digitize scholarly materials, as well as to promote and enhance the collection by supporting exhibitions, research and publications, and programming.

We also want to thank all the donors who have supported The Brown Fund in the past academic year, with special recognition for alumni who volunteered for their reunion class gift campaigns:

  • Class of 1992 Gift Committee Members: Junwoo Lee ’92, Sukjin Lim ’92, and Edward Moon ’92
  • Class of 2007 Gift Committee Vice-Chair: Sohyun Woo ’07
